Basil ‘Greek’ (Ocimum minumim L.) has a compact, mounded shape with very small, highly flavoured & fragrant leaves. It is subtler, sweeter than its Italian counterparts. Aromatic, lightly fresh and pleasantly spicy, the taste is somewhat like anise or cloves.
It is especially known as an important culinary herb in many Italian dishes, such as being the main ingredient in pesto. It has a wonderful affinity with tomato. Basil is at its best when freshly picked and is generally used in cooking to add flavour at the last minute, otherwise heat can destroy its fine flavour. Basil contains many important essential oils known to have antibacterial and anti-flammatory properties.
